About the Presenters:
W. Mark Saltzman is an engineer and educator. His research has impacted the fields of drug delivery, biomaterials, nanobiotechnology, and tissue engineering. This work is described in more than 300 research papers and patents. He is also the sole author of three textbooks: Biomedical Engineering, Tissue Engineering, and Drug Delivery. The grandson of farmers from southern Iowa, Saltzman graduated from Iowa State University and received graduate degrees from MIT. He has served as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, and Yale University. Saltzman was appointed the Goizueta Foundation Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Yale in 2002. He was the founding chair of Yale’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and served in that role for 12 years. Since 2016, he has been the Head of Jonathan Edwards College, one of Yale’s fourteen residential colleges. Dr. Saltzman has been recognized for excellence in research and teaching: Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Teacher-Scholar Award; the Allan C. Davis Medal as Maryland’s Outstanding Young Engineer; the Controlled Release Society’s Young Investigator Award and Founders Award; the Professional Progress in Engineering and Professional Achievement Citation in Engineering Awards from Iowa State University. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering; a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society; a Member of the Connecticut Academy of Science & Engineering; a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors; and a member of the US National Academy of Medicine and the US National Academy of Engineering. He has delivered over 300 invited lectures throughout the world.
Michael Girardi is a physician-scientist-educator in dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine. The son of two Italian immigrants, Michael was born and raised on the south shore of Long Island. A division I baseball player in college, Michael graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a dual degree in Biology and Computer Science, and with MD Honors from the Yale School of Medicine. After completing his dermatology residency and research fellowship at Yale, Dr. Girardi remained at Yale where he became the Co-Director of the Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic, Director of the Photopheresis and Phototherapy Units, Co-Director of the Yale Cancer Center’s Immunotherapy Program, as well as Professor, Vice Chair, Residency Program Director, and T32 Research Fellowship Director for the Department of Dermatology. During more than 20 years leading a National Cancer Institute-funded research program at Yale, his laboratory is credited with contributions to our understanding of skin cancer development, skin immunology, and cutaneous lymphoma. Dr. Girardi was elected into the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and awarded the Blavatnik Innovation Award at Yale, the Zeligman Lectureship Award at Johns Hopkins, and the Duhring lectureship award at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Girardi has also been selected as a Best Doctor by Connecticut Magazine in many years, last in 2021. Dr. Girardi is the holder of 5 biomedical patents, and co-founder of two Yale start-up companies, the latest being Stradefy Biosciences, Inc. with W. Mark Saltzman.
